Yes - shorting them will get you down to DC - perhaps you can just wire 
into the codec as well on the board's headers.

Good octo is live.

Is there a problem with pulseaudio interfering ?  If it is, check my 
post to alsa-lib here :

Not sure about this ... I have even seen kernel panics in dmesg but the 
soundcard works nicely - I have a feeling there is an ALSA bug in 
Raspbian which doesn't render things disfunctional but causes kernel panic.
