Hi Matt,

Thanks so much for the response.

I'm actually testing this with synths and the difference between the line levels is quite massive. However at some point a mic would be fun to add too.

Oh ok, I would imagine anything from RCA line level (+- 1 V) to balanced pro levels (+- 10 v).

What was your experience in voltage levels ?

From what you have said I think I will grab a Ultra2.

Its a good card.

Thanks again

Andrew

Hello,

I'm creating a sampler with a raspberry pi4 and i'm having trouble with the USB microphone line levels from some sources (some are fine, some are WAY too low).

Awesome ! I heard a track yesterday where the performer talked to a crowd, sampled their cheer and then added layers over that - phenomenal !

I wonder what kind of microphone you are planning to use ?

Dynamic mics don't need power, just lines. Condenser mics need phantom (can be 12v, 24v or 48v depending on the mic.)

Electret mics require mic bias voltages.

I suspect that your products are what I am after, but just wanted to check?

Would the Ultra soundcard be what I am after or is it overkill? The specs sounds pretty amazing
Does it fit a pi4 ?

All our products fit a Pi 4 and 3 and probably 2 as well.

The electret mics would be supported by the cheaper stereo cards (zero or the original) or the Ultra 2 card. You can do dynamic mics with all of them, however keep in mind that you need gain for microphones. Some of the soundcards will provide gain on the input stage. The Ultra 2 card drops the gain by around 6:1 on the input stage, through the balanced lines and keeps the gain 1:1 through the RCA input lines.

I also forgot to mention that the Ultra 2 and the stereo cards have electret preamps built in as well. You can swap them out in some way for your own electret mics if that is what you would like to use. These codecs which support electret microphones have good onboard input audio buffers with large gain capability - particularly well suited to low level signals which you get from microphones.

Because of the way we design our soundcards, you can also implement your own preamplifiers (with the exception of the original stereo soundcard).

Many thanks

Matt
